Enhancing the curriculum collaboratively

This project, managed by Trent University, has several goals. We intend to enhance Indigenous perspectives in the online curriculum shared among North American UArctic partner institutions to ensure that students have opportunity for engagement with Indigenous cultural authorities. Our overarching goal is to support awareness of Indigenous culture, traditional knowledge, language, political mobilization and self-governance efforts among students taking Circumpolar Studies online at UArctic member institutions. Another is to facilitate and support online experiential learning through cross-cultural dialogue and practical application of circumpolar knowledge. This will be targeted towards supplementation of text-based modules and online curriculum that are available for the delivery of a conventional program focusing on natural science, economies, resources and environment within UArctic member institutions participating in UArctic core studies or offering circumpolar studies curriculum.

The idea is that there is less opportunity for students to engage online in real-time experiential learning activities focused on diplomatic simulations of Arctic Council Member States and Permanent Participants (Indigenous peoples Organizations, or to engage in active learning of traditional and cultural knowledge than there would be in comparable credit hours in other academic fields of instruction. A final goal is to create a model for curated virtual learning boxes as part of existing online curriculums - particularly those developed in support of redeveloped and Indigenous content. These boxes will include supplementary cultural and written materials as well as visual and audio materials, customized articles and text.
